Grants and Funding

The National Human Genome Research Institution (NHGRI) Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) research program has announced three new programs that fit into NHGRI’s new strategic plan for the future of genomics, informing “the development of sound research, health, and public policies so that we can all realize the greatest benefit from the information that exists in each of our genomes.”  These include an R01 project grant program ($500,000 per year for three years), an R03 project grant ($50,000 per year for two years), and an R21 developmental research grant award (total of up to $275,000 over two years).

The NIH has announced the 2012 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award Program and the 2012 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award ProgramApplications for the Pioneer Award will be accepted from September 7 – October 7, 2011; applications for the New Innovator Award will be accepted from September 14 – October 14, 2011.

Policy

NIH requests your input!  If you have ideas that “have the potential to fundamentally change how we think about, support, or do research in a specific field, or to create an entirely new field”, NIH asks that you contribute those ideas to new Common Fund programs for 2013. Deadline for feedback is September 14, 2011.

After six years as director of the Center for Scientific Review (CSR) for the National Institutes of Health, it was announced earlier this month that Dr. Toni Scarpa will retire in September.  CSR receives all and reviews most of the 80,000 grant applications sent to NIH annually.  For more information, read the press release.

In his address to the United States on July 25, President Obama mentioned medical research as a specific investment that the country must continue despite plans to reduce the deficit. FASEB President Joseph C. LaManna wrote a letter thanking the President for his support of medical research, saying “These are very challenging times but we take great comfort in knowing you clearly recognize that our future depends on research.”   For the entire letter, see the link above.
