Policy Alert

The NCRR Task Force has released a "straw model" showing the proposed new NIH homes for current NCRR programs.  The link also invites feedback to the Task Force on this proposal.  Because NIH is limited by law to 27 institutes and centers, in order to accommodate the proposed National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), it has been recommended that the programs under the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) be distributed to other institutes and centers

The US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is releasing the first of seven requests for applications (RFA) to the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to support research, education and extension in fundamental and applied food and agricultural services. There are six priority areas for funding including plant health and production and plant products and renewable energy, natural resources and environment. For more information on all seven RFA’s, including one for fellowships for pre- and postdoctoral students, see the link above.

Subject areas include biotechnology, biodefense and bioinformatics.   The January 13, 2011, The Chronicle of Higher Education article on universities favoring scientific research at the expense of teaching, undermining the research programs by not adequately preparing undergraduates and graduate students, who are the future scientists needed to work in these research labs.  The Chronicle article was based on articles in Nature and ScienceThree GSA members, including Board member Utpal Banerjee, Sarah C. R. Elgin and Graham C. Walker were among the authors of the Science article.
