Members in the News

Congratulations to GSA Member Ronald W. Davis (Stanford), recipient of the 2011 Peter and Patricia Gruber Genetics Prize in recognition of his pioneering work “in the development and application of recombinant-DNA techniques.”  The Gruber Foundation notes that “Davis has profoundly influenced the way scientists study the molecular basis of life.”  Davis will receive the $500,000 cash award, a medal, and a citation at the 12th International Congress of Human Genetics (ICHG) and the 61st American Society of Human Genetics Annual Meeting in Montreal this October.

GSA Board Member Sue Wessler (UC-Riverside) is the recipient of the 2012 Excellence in Science Award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).  Each year, the FASEB Excellence in Science Award “recognizes outstanding achievement by women in biological science,” and presents the recipient with a $10,000 grant.  GSA congratulates Dr. Wessler, who was also recently granted the Stephen Hales Prize from the American Society of Plant Biologists!

Careers

Genome Technology has released the results of its 9th annual salary survey.  The results are broken down by region, gender, career, and position, among other factors.  In 2011, senior scientists in industry reported a median salary of approximately $75,000, while associate professors reported a median of approximately $100,000.  However, the prospect of raises or promotions in industry looks more promising than in academia, though the positions in industry may not be as stable.

Outreach

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has launched a free application for the iPad called Science360.  According to a press release, “The main application screen is laid out in a user-friendly format, providing users with the top news, videos, images and discoveries from the science community.”  iPads and other tablets are being used more frequently in the classroom worldwide.
