The meeting, June 17-20 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC, promises to be an outstanding opportunity for basic research scientists studying questions relevant to cancer in model organisms to interact with those researching cancer in humans.   In addition to keynote addresses by Burt Vogelstein, Eric S. Lander and Angelika Amon, the directors of two NIH institutes will address participants: Chris A. Kaiser of NIGMS and Eric Green of NHGRI.

The 10th International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics abstract submission deadline is Thursday, March 29, 2012.  The conference is June 20-24, 2012 at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Nominations for the Chi-Bin Chien Award for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows or new faculty who will be attending the Zebrafish Conference are being accepted until April 1, 2012. Donations to the Chi-Bin Chien Award fund are also encouraged to ensure that the award is sustainable.

Policy

President Obama announced last week that he intends to appoint Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy as the new director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). NIFA, which was established by Congress in 2008, administers most of USDA’s extramural research funding, including the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI). Dr. Ramaswamy has been dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU) since 2009 and also directs the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. As an agricultural entomologist, he has studied the reproductive biology of insects and plant-insect interactions. Dr. Ramaswamy is expected to begin his six-year term at NIFA later this spring.

Awards

Nominations for the National Medal of Science are now open. Consider nominating deserving members of the genetics community for the nation’s highest honor for scientists. Nominations are due March 31, 2012.
