Guidelines for Making Poster Presentations

All poster sessions will be located in Merrill Hall.  There will be four poster sessions. There will be two posters on each 4’ high x 8’ wide poster board. Each author will be assigned to share a poster board. Each author will have a net useable space of 3’ 8” (111.8cm) high x 3’ 8” (111.8cm) wide.

Presenters may mount abstracts beginning at 6:00pm on Sunday, June 8.  All abstracts will remain up for the duration of the conference.  Authors will present according to the following schedule:

Monday, June 9 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Presenters of all even-numbered posters
Tuesday, June 10 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Presenters of all even-numbered posters
Wednesday, June 11 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Presenters of all odd-numbered posters
Thursday, June 12 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Presenters of all odd-numbered posters

All presenters should remove their abstracts on Thursday, June 12 at 6:00 pm.  After that time, remaining posters will be removed and may be lost or thrown away. The meeting does not take responsibility for posters that are not removed on time.

Guidelines for Preparing Effective Posters

A great poster is readable, legible, well organized and succinct.

  • Prepare a heading at the top of your poster indicating the abstract title, authors and affiliations.

  • Authors can include a picture of themselves to facilitate registrants finding them to discuss their work after the day of their presentation.

  • Posters should be designed to summarize current research in graphic forms: charts, tables, graphs, pictures, etc.  Simple use of color can add effective emphasis.

  • Make the title large enough to be read easily from a reasonable distance (~ 4 feet).

  • Use a type size that can be read easily at a distance.  Using a font that is too small is the single most common error in poster preparation!  If there's not enough space to fit all the text, shorten the text. GEnev

  • Details of methodology should be brief and should be placed at the end of the legend.  Many successful posters provide a bulleted list of conclusions and questions raised.

  • Some references should be provided, but they need not be as extensive as those in papers.  References supply interested parties with routes into the literature and provide the proper context for your work.

  • Audiovisual equipment is not permitted in the poster board area.

The poster schedule may not be altered.  If there is a conflict in presentation times, you must cancel your presentation or change presenters.  Please notify Marilyn Kobayashi at kobayashi@berkeley.edu.
