Workshops
The deadline for proposals has passed.
Proposals are being solicited for workshops at the meeting. Workshops are scheduled for the afternoons of June 25 and 26, and will be open to all meeting attendees. In the past, successful workshops have focused on a variety of topics, and can be based on a specific scientific area or on a technical approach applicable to various problems. We particularly encourage proposals for workshops on educational issues. Participants will not be required to submit general meeting abstracts for their workshop presentations.
There is no set format for the workshops. They are viewed as an opportunity to be creative and discuss the topics you find important, in a way you believe will be productive. However, based on past experiences there seem to be some formats that work better than others. In particular, the organizers do not want the workshops to duplicate the oral sessions, so you should not plan your workshop as a series of talks without adequate time for discussion. At the other end of the spectrum, totally free-form discussions do not work well, and having a planned set of questions or topics to guide the discussion is a good idea.

In association with the 11th International Meeting on Zebrafish Development and Genetics, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and ZFIN, we are pleased to announce a one day 'Working with Zebrafish Genome Resources' Workshop.
Each workshop is broken into modules designed to give a broad overview of a given topic with examples chosen by the trainers. The modular structure consists of a discussion of theory and methods, coverage of software and web resources, and a series of "hands on" worked examples. Time is provided in each session for participants to carry out their own research in the presence of the trainers, and participants are encouraged to bring their own problems (e.g sequence for analysis) with them. All materials used during the workshop series will be available on the Web, in the form of manuals and information. Zebrafish specific examples will be used wherever possible.
This course is limited to 40 participants and will be held in English. Each participant will be required to provide their own wireless enabled laptop for the duration of the course.
The course manual will be made available as a PDF and will be sent out to participants one week prior to the course, and will also be available online during the workshop.
There will be a course fee of $50 for all
participants.
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a not for profit organization, therefore the course fee is designed to cover the cost of workshop. Participants will be expected to arrange and fund their own travel and accommodation.
7th Zebrafish Disease Models Conference (ZDM7)
The 7th Zebrafish Disease Models Conference (ZDM7) will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, from June 28th – July 1st 2014. In the past, the ZDM conferences have primarily concentrated on cancer, hematopoiesis and immunity. Now it is broadend to include all Zebrafish Models of Disease. The ZDM conference will be immediately following the International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics, to facilitate the travel and accommodation for those scientists who will be attending both conferences.
A special two day registration to the International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics is available to confirmed ZDM7 attendees. The fee is $100 to attend Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28. To take advantage of this special offer, complete the registration form and email it to mahoney@genetics-gsa.org. Once the participants' ZDM7 registration is confirmed, the form will be processed and a confirmation will be emailed to the registrant.
Chi-Bin Chien Award

Award Announcement
The Chi-Bin Chien Award was established by the zebrafish research community and GSA in memory of Dr. Chi-Bin Chien (1965 – 2011). Chi-Bin was Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Utah and served the international zebrafish community in numerous ways, including his service as Director of the Zebrafish Neural Development and Genetics Course at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory and as an organizer of the International Conference on Zebrafish Genetics and Development. The Award celebrates Chi-Bin’s enthusiasm and love for the discussion of scientific ideas and the good things that grow out of interactions and open discourse among scientists, his efforts to mentor and support the development of young scientists, and the collaborative and generous spirit with which he contributed to the advance of research with the zebrafish. The award will be given to an outstanding graduate student, postdoctoral trainee, or recently appointed faculty member from any country who has made significant contributions to the field of zebrafish research and has exhibited the generosity and openness that characterized and motivated Chi-Bin. The awardee will be granted a cash award and international recognition as an invited speaker at the biennial International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics.

Nominations for the Chi-Bin Chien Award should be submitted by the candidate’s PhD or post-doctoral mentor by email by March 26, 2014 to
zebrafish@genetics-gsa.org. The application package should be a single PDF file that includes:
