The 56th Annual Drosophila Research Conference, sponsored by the Genetics Society of America, is taking place March 4-8, 2015 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers. This is the premier meeting for students, postdoctoral fellows, research staff and principal investigators studying Drosophila melanogaster. Over 1,500 scientists are attending, with over 1,000 presentations that include 170 talks. Several workshops as well as education and career development sessions are available for researchers at all stages.

On-site registration spots are still available starting at 3:30pm on Wednesday, March 4. Attendees and non-attendees alike are invited to participate in the conference discussion on Twitter under the hashtag #DROS2015.

Allan C. Spradling is currently Director of the Department of Embryology, Carnegie Institution for Science, and Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His laboratory has helped develop Drosophila genetic technology, most recently as part of the Gene Disruption Project. The Spradling group uses Drosophila to study oogenesis, showing frequently that processes characterized in flies are conserved in mice and vice versa. Researchers also have a longstanding interest in studying polytene cells as general models for understanding genome and chromosome replication and function. Finally, lab members have discovered and characterized Drosophila stem cells and the niches that control them.
